LOVING, RUSH SPARK JAYCEES TO FIFTH INTER-STATE WIN

Paul Loving and Bill Rush sparked a slow starting Graceland five to a 42-36 conference win over the Kansas City Jaycees here last Tuesday night.

It was an exciting tilt that had a full house alternately groaning and shrieking throughout the entire game, right down to the final bell. Kansas City jumped into a comfortable lead at the start and from the way their tosses were connecting it looked like it was their night.

Loving hit the hoop for 8 points, to enable the Yellow-Jackets to lead at half-time 17-16.

The Blue Jays came back strong and took the lead, heading the locals, 28-23 with but seven or eight minutes to go. With the aid of some stellar rebound work by Rush, and quick buckets by Rush, Gage and Eskridge, Graceland untracked to ooze out a win by a five point margin. Eskridge was high point man with 16 markers.

This was Graceland's fifth conference win against no losses, and they continue to head the Inter-State loop.

On Friday night Graceland entertains Wentworth, following on Saturday night with a league game against Moberly.

TIRE BOARD TO ASSUME JOB OF ALL RATIONING

It isn't the Tire Rationing Board any more, the name has been changed and henceforth it will be known as the Decatur County Rationing Board, indicating that J. W. Barr of Lamoni; J. L. Heaton of LeRoy and Herb Scott of Leon will be assigned the task of rationing all commodities and goods on which sales are to be restricted during the duration.

It appears that cars are next to be rationed and board members expect instructions to cover their sale. News from Washington indicates that rationing may be expected in many lines and a present the emphasis is being laid on sugar.

Carful for the opportunity for service, J. W. Barr is ready and willing to assume more responsibilities as rationing increases; and the other two members are doubtless as willing as he. Members serve without pay and at expense to themselves.

"When my tires are gone," Mr. Barr said, "I will be in the same position as other people and will have to take the bus to Leon to attend our meetings. But whatever the inconvenience and expense involved it is small compared to contributions being made by our men in the service."

Kemper Is Ambulance Benefit Affair

Proceeds from Monday night's basketball game between Graceland and Kemper, two of the Inter-State conference leading contenders, will go 100 per cent to the Iowa Ambulance Fund. For this reason no season tickets will be honored on that night.

All expenses, including Kemper's traveling expenses, will be borne by Graceland athletic department; while everyone, including the players and coaches, will pay at the door. The Ambulance Fund is being subscribed by benefit basketball games all over the state, over $1,000 being raised in this manner at Iowa State College, Ames.

A. R. Gilbert, Graceland coach, stated that due to the fact that season tickets would still permit the bearer to see the stipulated eight home games, he felt sure season ticket holders would be glad to be part of such a worthy enterprise and pay their way into the game.

The Yellow Jackets defeated Kemper on the Booneville floor, 55-47 in a hair-raising tilt and this game should be every bit as good.

Don't forget - Monday night, February 16 - and the admission is only 25-cents, tax included.

FOOD FOR WAR PROGRAM UNDER WAY IN COUNTY
To Select Two People In Each Four-Mile Square for Coordinators -
To Hold Instruction School

One man and one woman are being selected in each 4 square mile area throughout the county to introduce the extension service war emergency educational food production program which is now well under way in this county, says Fred B. Lewis, county farm bureau president. The purpose of the program is to encourage local people in every farm home to mutually discuss how food production can be attained with a minimum of expense, labor and soil resources.

There will be eighteen educational cooperators per township, on the basis of two to each four square miles. These cooperators will be called into training schools over the county soon after February 16, to secure information and other discussion material on food production in the home including home gardening and canning and feed and livestock production on every farm. The cooperators will then act as leaders in their respective four square mile districts and call their neighbors in for discussion on the subjects taken up at the training schools.

The following township committeemen, appointed by H. B. Lovett, chairman of the U. S. D. A. War Board, will call their committee together and select 4 square mile cooperators: Irwin Brennaman, Richland; Roy O'Hair, Long Creek; Everett Jones, Franklin; Nels Johnson, Garden Grove; Clyde Glazebrook, Grand River; Mike Crees, Decatur; Walter Snyder, Center; Horace Wiley, High Point; Alvin Ballantyne, Bloomington; Lee McDaniel, Burrell; Frank Chastain, Eden; Dillon Frost, Woodland; Curtis Cunningham, Fayette; Dewey Bolon, New Buda; Ross Dale, Hamilton; Otis Stuteville, Morgan.
