THARP GENEALOGY
Tharp Genealogy, 4 Generations Davis County, IA: Jerry Green.
This booklet deals primarily with the known ancestors and descendants of H. Benjamin Tharp and Elizabeth Maxon, who were married in Shrewsbury, New Jersey in 1778/9. At the present time I know nothing about H. Benjamin Tharp's ancestry.
-Jerry Green
This is a section, revised for the second time, taken from my unpublished book, LAPLANDERS AND TULIPS, that was typed in 1984. I found that to have all sixteen familes in the same book was okay, however, having to refer to other sections was at times cumbersome, to say nothing about when someone wanted a photocopy of a section. With the advent of the wondrous and sometimes mystifying invention, the personal computer, I decided that I could lift each section out, and keep each as a separate file. This becomes much easier to add or change entries and to print out a copy when someone wants it. This is being done on an IBM Compatible using WordPerfect. I also have this information on the Personal Ancestry File (PAF).
These sections are not meant to be a finished product, but just the basis for one. The information has been collected from a great many individuals, books, scrapbooks, census records and vital records. There are no doubt errors and I hope that they will be pointed out to me. Omissions and incomplete collateral lines mean that I probably do not yet have that information. Additional information about any of these families is always
welcome. As usual copies are being given to my sisters, Susan and Beth, and a copy will be placed in the Davis County Genealogy Society Library.

The numbering system is arranged in a manner which permits expansion to include an individual at any point in time, or any place in the family, without using subscripts, etc. The basis is the Ahnentafel numbering system for ancestors.
In each ancestors family, each child is assigned a number: 1, 2, 3, etc., arranged in the order of birth, according to avialable information. If that person's line is continued, his or her children will be assigned numbers in the same manner, and so on through succeeding generations.
There are at least two separate and identifiable Tharp families in southern Davis County, Iowa. The Tharp's listed in this section lived mainly in Fabius Township and in eastern Appanoose County. The family that stemmed from Wyacondah Township, many of whom will be found in the OWENS section,
were descendants of Nathan Tharp. It is possible that these two families are related because they were in the same general vicinity in New Jersey at the same time.

On 20 May 1811, after the death of his mother, Timothy was bound with his sister, Bethia, to Thomas Maxson, a cousin of their mother. Soon after their marriage, Timothy and Sarah settled on Bone Creek in what is now Ritchie County, West Virginia. Timothy was the second merchant at Auburn, West Virginia. He erected the first tannery in 1852 and also built the first mill, which was a corn cracker and a saw mill. In 1840, a congregation of the Methodist Episcopal Church was organized at the home of Timothy Tharp, which is also where the services were held until 1844. The first school house at Auburn was erected in that year and was also used for church services. The
first church structure was built in 1855 on a lot deeded to the
church by Andrew Law and land for the cemetery was deeded to the
church by Timothy Tharp. He was among the Trustees of the church at that time. Between the years of 1836 and 1853, he bought a total of 4083 acres of land in what is now Ritchie and Gilmer Counties, West d. 17 October 1897 Virginia.
