Basketball Season

Considering all handicaps, the basketball season was one of great success.

As in football, it was impossible to secure a regular coach.  However, Supt. Mahannah offered his services and proceeded at once to mold a team out of the material at hand.  With three veterans as a nucleus, Captain Krohnke, Birdsall for center and Cross for forward, he turned out a highly creditable team.

The first game with Coon Rapids spelled defeat for Perry.  Several factors, which combined, proved too much of a handicap for the inexperienced Perry team.  Coon Rapids' weight and experience, coupled with the fact that it a strange floor, downed Perry to the tune of 24 to 40.  The game was interesting and fast and team fought to the last.

The next week we journeyed to Valley Junction and came home with the long end of the score, which was 28 to 11.  Valley Junction proved to be very weak and seemed unable to retain the ball when they gained possession of it.

Then we met Dallas Center.  Although on our home floor, the Dallas Center team proved too strong.  The game was close until the last five minutes, when Dallas Center succeeded in locating the basket and dropped the ball in the loop four times.  The score of 25 to 33 does not mean loose playing on the part of Perry, because Perry led until the last few minutes.

A week later the team went to Dallas Center and was defeated again.  This time it was due, in small measure, to the large floor.  The boys were unable to overcome this handicap and the final score was 42 to 19.

A week later we went to Grand Junction and came home on the long end of a 37 to 20 score.  The Grand Junction team was unable to get close to the basket, due to watchfulness of the Perry guards.

Grand Junction came to Perry on the following date seeking revenge for the defeat administered them the week before, but again they were downed to the tune of 29 to 21.

In a return game at home with Valley Junction, Perry ran up a score of 27 to 7.  The dazzling speed of the Perry forwards proved too much for the slower Valley Junction team.  Perry had no trouble running up this comparatively small score and several substitutes were used in the second half.

This game completed the scheduled season.  We met a team from the Field Artillery from Camp Dodge and defeated them by a score of 32 to 15.

The score made by the team this season should not be taken as the comparative strength.  In every game some subsitutes were used and in some the entire second team was substituted in the second half.  In games won and lost Perry has a large margin on her side of the ledger.

Perry 24 Coon Rapids 40 Lost
Perry 28 Valley Junction 11 Won
Perry 25 Dallas Center 33 Lost
Perry 19 Dallas Center 42 Lost
Perry 37 Grand Junction 20 Won
Perry 29 Grand Junction 21 Won
Perry 27 Valley Junction 7 Won
Perry 32 Soldiers 15 Won

With five games won and three games lost, the season may be considered one great success.  We are very proud of the result and what at first seemed a hopeless attempt turned out to be a most successful year.
