vi. JENNIE PEARL SMITH, b. November 17, 1869, Clinton Co IA; d. October 08, 1940, Moline IL; m. HORACE EDWARD BAILEY.

Notes for JENNIE PEARL SMITH: After Horace died, a house was built for Jennie. Not sure by whom. In 1904 Lena and Oley were married and she was living in it then.

In 1908 Jennie moved to Colfax ND. Daughter Lena and husband Oley Ohlsen moved with her along with their children 2 year old Irene and 6 week old Florence. Jennie's other children, 9 year old Horace, 17 year old Ralph and 16 year old Lora, also moved with her. They lived in the hayloft of the barn while waiting for the sod house to be built. "There were blizzards and skunks", recalls Irene.

In January of 1912, Lena and Oley left ND, possibly because of repeated crop failures. Irene said the land was poor. Jennie and her three children stayed on the homestead for a time until she married W. D. Thomas.

They moved to Minneapolis MN where they owned a store. Lora, married in 1915, gave birth to her child there. W.D. and Jennie were eventually divorced. Not married very long.

She then went to Rapid City SD and lived there for a number of years while operating a boarding house. In the mid '30s she became ill and went to live with her daughter in Moline IL. She died there of breast cancer.

Jennie was a very religious woman and didn't allow card playing. If someone came in with cards, she threw them in the stove. However, in later years she mellowed out and enjoyed playing cards herself.

(Information received from granddaughter, Cathy Bailey.)
