The Law - Car Owners Must Pay

Lists of automobile owners who have not paid their auto license fees will be published in the official papers of the county during the first week of May. The state requires county treasurers to take this action at that time.

Within 15 days after the publication of the list, the sheriff is required to take possession of such motor vehicles on which the tax has not been paid and advertise and sell same for the purpose of collecting the fees and costs. Follow the sections of the law covering these points:

On April 1, of the year of 1921, and annually hereafter, the department shall forward to the county treasurer of each county, a list of all motor vehicles in said counties on which the registration amount of delinquent fee; registration number; make and factory number; together with the name and address of the owner of the car as disclosed by the records. In the first week of May of each year the county treasurer shall case to be published in each of the official news papers in his county a list of all motor vehicles owned within the county which the liscense fee has not been paid for that year.

Immediately after the publication of the list as herein provided, it shall be the duty of the county treasurer to collect the liscense and penalty. The county treasurer shall collect from each delinquent, 50 cents on each vehicle on which the fee is delinquent to cover the cost of publication.

It shall be the duty of the sheriff of the county to forthwith proceed to the collection of unpaid fees and penalties as certified to him by the county treasurer by taking possession of the motor vehicle described in said certified list and sell same upon ten days notice for the purpose of collection tees, penalties and costs.
