Note! For many years there were two separate A.O.U.W. organizations in Elkader. The following article explains why:

May End the War - Peace Plans in Iowa Point to Cessation of Twenty Years of Hostilities in A.O.U.W. Orders

Iowa Falls, Ia., Jan. 19 - After being at war for twenty years, members of the United Workmen in Iowa, as well as members of other fraternal insurance orders over the state, will watch with much interest the movement just taken to reunite the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Iowa Workmen, two branches of an order that have been at war since the Iowa Workmen seceded in 1884.

If the plans do not miscarry the original branch of the order will absorb the Iowa Workmen, which seceded when the supreme lodge adopted a new rate of assessment and placed Iowa on the same basis as the southern states, where the ratio of mortality was much higher. About half the members of the order withdrew at the time of secession and have been members of the Iowa Workmen.

~Elkader Register, Thursday, January 21, 1904, page 1

Notes added by S. Ferrall:
In Clayton county by the late 1870's there were already 2 A.O.U.W. organizations, each frequently electing officers about the same time each year.
Elkader Lodge No. 44 is A.O.U.W. (Ancient Order of United Workmen)
Bismarck Lodge No. 110 also is A.O.U.W., but the branch seceded in the 1880s to be called Iowa Workmen.  When the newspapers reported lodge business they mostly referred to No. 110 as A.O.U.W. rather than specifying Iowa Workmen.

Pipemen - Jno. Bahr, A. J. Carpenter
Hydrant - S. R. Munger

It was determined at this meeting to divide the town into 4 fire wards for the purpose of signaling the location of the fire. The river and Main Street running from the jail to the Schmidt residence are taken for the dividing lines. On the West side the district north of Main Street was labled No. 1, that south of Main Street being No. 2. On the East side the north ward will be No. 3 and the one south of Main Street No. 4. The rule for signaling is simple. After the first general alarm, the number of taps with intervals between should correspond with the number of the ward in which the fire is located. This should be repeated several times and will result in saving time to the firemen and the citizens by giving them an idea of where to go. Everyone should remember this signal and make proper use of it when the occasion arises.

1902

History of the Elkader Band 1890-1902, Eleven Years of Organization
Extending over a period of more than 11 yeares of unbroken organization is a record which the Elkader Band may well be proud of. During this time the band has been in a position, and has ever been ready to furnish appropriate music for any occasion demanded. As a rule, bands in towns the size of Elkader are short lived, some come with the spring and barely exist during one summer; others live for several years. Not many can point to continuous organization of 11½ years.

During the latter part of August, 1890, efforts to bring about an organization of musicians were crowned with success, and it took the name of the Capitol Band. A second hand set of instruments were bought in Volga City. Within a month the name of the band was changed to K.P. Band of Elkader, for some consideration in regard to room rent. The band continued to go by this name until June 3rd 1901, although the consideration for that name had already been cancelled On the latter date the name of Elkader Band was unanimously adopted.

The first officers were elected Sept. 15th 1890, and were: H.D. Brown, Pres.; M.E. Munger, Vice Pres.; G.H. Grotewohl, Sec.; W.E. Prior, Treas. The other members of the band were: A.P. Bock, W.F. Reinecke, R.F. Schmidt, B.F. Falkenheiner, W.J. Vaupel, J.A. Kramer, J. Kepple, G.A. Candler & S.F. Steinhilber.

During the past eleven years the following persons have joined the organization: Peter Schumacher, F.E. Branch, Otto Friend, ,E.D. Alexander Jos. Leonard, Chas. Johnsen, A.C. Reinecke, G.H. Wilke G.H. Schulte, Geo. C. Wolf, K.K Keith, Ray Friend, Herb Cook, Herm. Uecker L.J. Kramer, A. Eberhart, E. Beer, R.C. Reinecke, L.C. Muschewaske & Chas. Roggman.

Some of these members have moved awayy, some have resigned and some have been dropped from the membership. Those constituting the band to-day are: O.C. Friend, Pres.; L.J. Kramer, Vice Pres; W.F. Reinecke, Secy-Treas.; R.F. Schidt; G.H. Wilke; H.W. Uecker; Geo. Munger; Chas. Roggman; A. Eberhart; Ray Friend; L.C. Muschewske and R.C. Reinecke. F. Stovicek is the present leader and director.

This is the first band in Elkader that has ever owned uniforms. Steps were taken in the summer of 1896 to procure a set. The citizens donated $65.00 for a series of open air concerts during that summer. After making a loan in March 1897, an order for uniforms costing $171.60 was sent to the M.C. Lilley & Co. of Columbus, Ohio. This company has furnished us free of charge the above halftone, showing the uniforms as they are to-day after 5 year's service. With an extra set of white coats, an extra uniform bought later and other items pertaining to the uniforms, the amount invested there-in is $224.15.

In July 1899, there being quite a sum of money in the treasury and several engagements contracted for, the band made arrangements to buy a set of new, standard quality instruments. For $450.00 cash, the band secured what it desired from C.G. Conn, Elkart, Ind. About one year later they bought leather cases for all the instruments, these costing about $80.00 more.

The above picture is from a photo taken by Hale last summer. [the photo was published with the article, but after microfilming the image is too dark to display here] Since then the band has suffered the loss by death of a valued member, George Herning. All the others are active members except Ed. Beer, who has removed to Brooklyn, N.Y.

The people of Elkader take much pride in this organization, in the character of their music and its good management.
