Clayton County District Court - May Term - 1923
Elkader Register, Thur., 31 May 1923.

State of Iowa vs. Earl Wescot. Defendant pleads guilty to crime of running a gambling house. Ordered that he pay a fine of $50.00 and costs of prosecution. Ordered that gambling devices seized be immediately destroyed.

State of Iowa vs. J. W. Stocks. Defendant pleads guilty to crime of "Bootlegging." Ordered that he be committed to jail for 60 days and pay a fine of $50.00. On account of this being his first conviction jail sentence is suspended during good behavior.

State of Iowa vs. Joseph Soliski, Jr. Defendant pleads guilty to crime of "Bootlegging." Adjudged that he pay a fine of $200.00 and costs of prosecution and that he be committed to jail until fine is paid at rate of $3.33 1/3 pe day.

State of Iowa vs. Mika A. Ross. Defendant pleads guilty of crime of adultery. Adjudged that he pay a fine of $100.00 and costs of prosecution and be committed to the county jail for one year. It appearing that this is the first conviction of the defendant and on request of his wife, the jail sentence is suspended for 30 days and if fine and costs are paid within that time, jail sentence will be further suspended during good behavior.

State of Iowa vs. Harry Clyde Brown. Defendant states that his real name is Gail Hockman. Pleads guilty to crime of "Breaking and entering" office and that this is his second offense, being previously convicted of a felony. Ordered that he be committed to the state penitentiary at Fort Madison for not to exceed ten years and pay costs of restitution.

State of Iowa vs. Frank Grady. Defendant pleads guilty to unlawfully "keeping for sale intoxicating liquor", Adjudged that he pay a fine of $80.00 and costs and be committed to jail until fine is paid at rate of 3.33 1/3 per day.

State of Iowa vs. Allen Crawford. Defendant pleads guilty of crime of unlawful possession of narcotic drugs. Sentenced to six months imprisonment in county jail at hard labor and to pay costs of prosecution.

State of Iowa vs. Michael Bente. Mr. Bente plead guilty to the charge of having possession of intoxicating liquor with intent to sell same and drew a fine of $200.00 and costs with the warning that a second offense would mean serving time.

State of Iowa vs. Wilber Henkes. The defendant plead guilty to breaking and entering the Gossman restaurant and stealing a small sum of money. He was sentenced to Anamosa for not to exceed five years.

State of Iowa vs. Wm. Rodolph. Defendant pleads guilty of illegal possession of intoxicating liquors. [No punishment indicated in article.]

State of Iowa vs. Elmer Gordon, Bootlegging. Defendant pleads guilty. Ordered that he be confined in the jail of Clayton County, Iowa, for a period of six months at hard labor and pay costs of this proceeding.

State of Iowa vs. Harry Homes. Defendant plead guilty to crime of "receiving stolen goods". Sentenced to pay a fine of $200.00 and be committed to county jail for six months. Judge Taylor suspended the jail sentence during good behavior, while defendant works and supports his family.

State of Iowa vs. Harry Homes. Defendant plead guilty to crime of bootlegging. Sentenced to pay fine of $300 and costs.

State of Iowa vs Edwin Lenth. Tried before jury on charge of carrying dangerous and concealed weapons. Verdict of guilty returned by jury. Sentenced to reformatory at Anamosa for intermediate term not to exceed two years and pay costs.

State of Iowa vs. Anton Hesselman. Defendant pleads guilty to crime of maintaining a nuisance. Sentenced to pay fine of $800.00 and costs including an attorney's fee for county attorney of $80.00. Ordered that nuisance be abated. Other crimes against same defendant ordered left off calendar.

State of Iowa vs John Pol. Defendant plead guilty to "bootlegging". Sentenced to pay a fine of $500.

State of Iowa vs Fred Brase. Defendant plead guilty to charge of "illegal possession of intoxicating liquor." Fined $200 and costs.

State of Iowa vs. F. J. Roeben. Defendant pleads guilty to crime of nuisance. Fined $500 and costs including attorney fee of $50.00 for County Attorney. Ordered that nuisance be abated.

State of Iowa vs. Otto Szemkus. Defendant plead guilty to crime of nuisance. Fined $500.00 and costs including County Attorney's fee of $60. Nuisance ordered abated.

State of Iowa vs. Charles Clinton. Defendant plead guilty to crime of nuisance. Fined $300. and costs and County Attorney's fee of $60. Nuisance ordered abated.

State of Iowa vs. Guy Coonfare. Defendant plead guilty to crime of nuisance. Fined $500. and costs of County Attorney's fee of $50.

State of Iowa vs. Mint Vending Machine. Adjudged that machine is a gambling device. Ordered that it be destroyed.

State of Iowa vs. Wm. Reinhard. Defendant plead guilty to crime of nuisance. Fined $500, costs and County Attorney's fee of $50. Nuisance ordered abated.

State of Iowa vs. Miles Coonfare. Defendant plead guilty to crime of nuisance. Fined $450. and costs including County Attorney's fee of $45. Nuisance ordered abated.
