Stewart Hellenbolt

Stewart Hellenbolt was born in Toronto, Canada on January 29, 1825, the son of Dennis and Catharine (Brown) Hellenbolt. He married Helen McClintock Mitchell in Wisconsin and they removed to Clayton county, Iowa. He and Helen were the parents of three children. Stewart was a farmer, blacksmith and horse doctor. Helen died May 13, 1902 and Stewart died on March 13, 1913. They are buried in the Monona City cemetery.

There are many stories as to why the 'H' was dropped from Hellenbolt, but the simplest is that Helen McClintock Mitchell Hellenbolt, wife of Stewart Hellenbolt, simply didn't want her name to begin with "Hell". Below is the grave marker for Helen McClintock Mitchell Hellenbolt in the Monona City cemetery. Note how the 'H' has been scratched off the marker making Hellenbolt 'Ellenbolt'.

Mary O'Leary Ellenbolt

Retus Ellenbolt, Sr, was born 1859 in Green Co., Wisconsin on May 20, 1859. He married Mary 'Margan' O'Leary in 1880, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Dennis O'Leary. They lived on their farm on Pleasant Ridge, and became the parents of seven children. Mary was born May 27, 1861 in NY and died March 19, 1913 and is buried in the Monona City cemetery. Retus was remarried in 1925 to Norma Volkert. They were the parents of one child. Retus died on February 8, 1932 in Monona and is buried in the Monona City cemetery.

Fred Ellenbolt, son of Retus, SR & Mary (O'Leary) Ellenbolt was married to Minnie Anderson. Minnie was the daughter of Charles and Christiana Anderson. The Anderson's emigrated from Vastra Steneby Sweden in 1880 with their son, Tony. The family ran a fruit farm on the outskirts of Monona. Their son, Anton Napolean 'Tony' Anderson, would eventually become the mayor of Clear Lake, Iowa. Charles & Christiana are buried in the Monona City cemetery.
