Osceola
Osceola at the present time has a population of 3,350. There are 12 churches — Assembly of God; Calvary Baptist; Christian (Disciples); Four Square Gospel; Church of Christ; Immanuel Luthern Osceola is the center for the Clarke Community schools, enrolling 1,589 pupils. The Clarke County Hospital opened Jan. 1953, with a normal capacity of 32 beds. On Feb. 1, 1968, it became a 70 bed general hospital, after a new addition was completed. The Osceola Municipal Airport has twelve light planes based there. There are three manufacturers located in the city — Snowdon, Inc., ladies lingerie, Armour Industrial Ammonia Division and Miller Products Company, makers of hitch pine, kick stands, precision machine parts, plating and stamping. The Clarke County State Bank as of October 4, 1967, had resources of $9,621,371.94. Located in Osceola is the Highway Patrol Headquarters for District Two, which includes Madison, Warren, Union, Clarke, Lucas, Ringgold, Decatur and Wayne Counties. The Leisure Manor, a $750,000 facility opened June 1966, with a capacity of 104 beds, offering nursing care to elderly, disabled or infirm. Osceola is headquarters for the Clarke Electrical Cooperation In., serving all or parts of nine counties. The United States Post Office serves 7,500 people. The volunteer fire department consists of 39 members and three fire fighting trucks plus emergency fire truck. Industry and special services in the area include agriculture; abstractors, accountants and tax consultants; attorneys; auto dealers, parts sales and service; ambulance; ammonia (industrial supplier); building contractors and suppliers; cleaners and dyers; electrical equipment sales and service; farm equipment sales and service; feed and fertilizer dealers and mixers; florists; |
food locker plant; food suppliers; furniture sales; hardware dealers; heating, air-conditioning and fuel sales and service; heavy truck service; insurance agencies; limestone quarries; lingerie manufacturer; office equipment sales and service; nursing home facilities; interstate pipeline; precision-made metal products; printing and publishing; public utilities; livestock auction sales; physicians and dentists; ready-mix concrete; realtors; rendering service; self-service laundries; veterinary clinic; upholsterers; wearing apparel; welding.
