Clarke County Sheriffs Posse

Sheriff John Stearns

The Clarke County Sheriff's Posse was formed in 1961 by Clarke County Sheriff, Kenneth Likes. The Posse is now under the supervision of Sheriff John H. Stearns.

The Posse consists of 65 members, 45 mounted on horses, 2 flyers and 18 rescue unit members. All members are Special Deputies of Clarke County.

The purpose of the Posse is to help Sheriff John H. Stearns, and other law enforcement agencies look for lost children, mental cases, plane crashes, train wrecks, serious auto accidents, drownings and disasters. The Posse will not be called to look for anyone known to be armed.

The Posse is supported by community fund raising activities, donations and a rodeo and horse show held annually.
