Stephen Loy Family

After the Revoluntionary War, Henry Starr and Jacob Starr came to Pike Co. Ohio to take up their Veterans Land Grant, about 4 miles south of the village of Jasper along the Sciota River, near the Loy Local.

They laid out their farms by plowing a line from one reference point to another (such as a clump of tree or a big rock). To this day the Loy Local is known as Loy run and the Starr local is known as Starr Hollow.

One Loy son, Stephen, married a Starr daughter, Minerva, on Dec. 17, 1846, and in 1847 emigrated to Kirksville, Iowa. In 1887 they moved to Clarke Co., Iowa, near Murray. To this union nine children were born, Petof, Sarah, Stephen, Mary, John, Milton, George, Sherman and Rosella, Mary died in girlhood. The others married and raised families and have descendants living in various parts of the country, including the Murray locality. Sarah, Milton, Sherman, George and Rosella all lived near Murray at one time. The family lived here until the sudden death of Mr. Loy on Aug. 13, 1888.

Sherman Loy married Maggie A. Weber Dec. 18, 1890. They lived 1 1/2 miles east of Thayer, Iowa, in Union County. Here their family of three children were born. Their children were—

Clyde E., Clair A., and Viola A. (Mrs. Howard Gore).

The family was forced to give up their home when the railroad was built and went through where their house was standing.

The railroad was started in 1900, and the family moved that fall to a farm about 3 miles northeast and in the spring of 1901 moved to the Loy farm 4 miles northwest of Murray.

Sherman Loy's wife passed away Feb. 28, 1920. He continued to live on the farm until 1928 when he moved into Murray. His son, Clair, took over the farm.

Clair A. Loy and Vera N. Huss were married April 14, 1929, and have made this their home. Their family of two children were born here. A daughter, Viola Verna, and a son, Paul Byron. They received their education in Clarke County schools.

Viola V. Loy married Calvin Willett June 7, 1953, and they reside near Thayer, Iowa. To this union four children were born. Their names are Jack, Sharon, Steven and Dale.

Paul B. Loy married Dixie C. Simons Feb. 17 1947, and they started farming 1/2 mile east of the old home place.

To this union were born five sons, Terry, Larry, Jerry, Gary, and Barry.
