Frank Smith Family

Family Home for 58 years

Frank Sheridan Smith, Sr., and his wife, Minnie, purchased this farm located 3/4 mile east of Murray in 1910. During their lives in Murray Frank owned and operated lumberyards in Murray, Winterset and Greenfield. They had three children, Ruth, Frank and Dorothy.

In 1936, their son, Frank S. Smith, Jr., and his wife, the former Opal Goodrich, took over the farm. In 1943, a son, Frank S. Smith III was born, but died a short time after birth. A daughter, Karen Anne, was born in 1944 and raised here. In the spring of 1954, Frank and Opal started a "Guest Farm" serving meals by reservation. This provided good meals served in a quiet, relaxing atmosphere and drewpeople from all over the state. They operated this for six years. In 1963, they moved from the farm to Des Moines and then to Jefferson where they now reside.

In 1963, Karen and Montelle (Monty) Lewis Chew were married and moved into the farm home. For two years they both drove back and forth and worked in Des Moines. Karen worked as secretary to the Subscription Promotion Manager of Successful Farming at Meredith Publishing Co. and Monty worked for Union Carbide and on Steel Construction. They raised livestock on the farm. In 1965, they went into farming altogether and rented the farm from Karen's parents.

Now they and their two year old daughter, Stephanie, have possession of the 400 acre farm.

Stephanie's paternal grandparents are Mr. & Mrs. C. M. Chew and grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Chew of Murray and Mr. & Mrs. Harley Reeves of Casper, Wyoming. Maternal great grandparents are Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Goodrich of Murray.
