HOPEVILLE CEMETERY OLD PART •• WEST |
Clarke County, Iowa Doyle Township Section 17 |
Nearest Town: Hopeville Earliest tombstone burial: Oct. 3, 1851 (#8-28) Latest tombstone burial: 1976 (#10-24) |
History: Hopevil1e was a little village long before 1850. The original cemetery was north and east of the old part of the cemetery. When Hopeville was incorporated, they moved the old cemetery to its present site. Not all the graves were moved; some of the old stones remained for many years, but now all are gone on the land now owned by Chester and Lavar Davis. |
The oldest grave in the double cemetery here is marked October 3, 1851, a George D Newton, Son of D & A Newton, one of the founders of the community of Hopeville. The cemetery is located about a half mile east of the town. In past years •• it was kept with pride. Though it is mowed regularly, the custodian does not trim around the tombstones very well. |
The Hopevi1le double cemetery is distinguished by calling the older part of the cemetery, the “West side", and the new part the "East side". It lies on the north side of the gravel road leading into Hopevi1le going west, the driveways going into both the Old West and New East, containing identical steel archway entrances. |
