Rock Township History

Township Map
Formation
Rock Township was originally a part of Tilden township but was detached in 1876. Name is derived from Rock Creek which flows through the township.  During the June session of the Board of Supervisors, the congressional township 91-41 was detached and named Rock. It is located south of Sheridan, east of Tilden and north of Willow townships.

Early settlers
They were Alexander Miller, Richard Larkin, Thomas Chapman, Charles Durkee in 1868; Blasius Spinharney, Daniel Melter, Adam Corzillius, Fred Bower, John Specht, Frank Kohn, Mattias and Jacob Fisch, "Matt" Thiel, John Braley, Thomas Caswell, Jacob Kirchner, and Dom Liffring.

Birth: Fred Melter, born June 1869
Death: wife of Richard Larkins, 1870
School: Taught by Lucy Spinharney in the fall of 1870
Religious services: Roman Catholic in 1871
Marriages: Thomas Chapman to Miss Smith and Matt Schuh to Miss Carrie Spinharney
Cemetery: established in 1886; a child of John Thompson was the first burial there

Rock Township covers an area of 35.95 square miles (93.1 km2) and contains no incorporated settlements.
