Washington High School 85th Graduating Class
Baccalaureate Services for Seniors Here
Washington High School seniors had baccalaureate services Sunday night at the high school auditorium.
The invocation, sermon and benediction were given by Dr. Victor Schuldt and the concert choir presented two selections.
The
commencement program will be held in the auditorium at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Rev. Robert Dougherty of Immaculate Conception Church will give the
invocation and benediction. Jane Sayre and the concert choir will
provide the music.
Richard Kinkead, superintendent of schools, will
introduce the speaker, Dr. Elmer Schwieder, associate professor at Iowa
State University. The professor’s topic will be “Congratulations. Now
What?”
Jack Kiser, high school principal will present the graduating
class and Dr. Irene Wiemers, president of the board of education, will
give out the diplomas.

Seniors Are Told: Further Education
There were 133 seniors graduated from Washington High School Tuesday night.
Jane
Sayre played “Pomp and Circumstance” for the processional and Rev.
Robert Dougherty of Immaculate Conception gave the invocation.
The
concert choir presented “Choose Something Like a Star” and “It’s Up to
Us”, then Richard Kinhead introduced the commencement speaker, Dr.
Elmer Schwieder, associate professor at Iowa State University.
GENERATION GAP
Dr.
Schwieder’s address was entitled “Congratulations. Now What?” He
discussed the generation gap in terms of past generations as well as
the present.
He felt that past generations have given something to
build with and that future generations should further their education
so that they might build better.
Jack Kiser, high school principal,
introduced the graduating class and Dr. Irene Wiemers, president of the
Board of Education, presented diplomas.
Rev. Dougherty gave benediction and the recessional was played by Miss Sayre.
The class motto “We have crossed the bay – the ocean lies before us” seemed suitable for young people facing a new way of life.
