was a minister. I have found him listed in the marriage books preforming marriages during
the early 1880's. However, I haven't been able to find a denomination he was associated
with. Ministers returns have him signing as "Minister of the Gospel". Also have some
land records listing the book and page numbers for the deeds, but have been unable to
locate the actual deed. Have these deeds been distroyed and all we have left are the
indexes? I spoke with someone at the County Recorders office, but they were not very
helpful. Probably just having a bad day. Was hopeing that by finding a deed it might
tell me where they were living prior to their move to Cass County. I also have spouses
and some children for Albert's kids. Would love to find a cousin!

they went to Iowa, but I haven't any proof. The 1860 IA Census Index shows an Andrew SHAFFER in Cass
Co, Logansport. If someone has access to the actual census would you please see if that matches these
folks: 1) Andrew SHAFFER (or perhaps SHEFFER) born about 1810 VA. His wife, Sarah/Sally PENCE born
about 1805 VA. Their daughter, Mary Jane SHAFFER born abt 1830, OH married Daniel SHAFFER 1853 Preble
Co. (I have seen Mary Jane in records as Jane and as Mary also). I suspect Jane and her husband, who
were probably cuz, traveled with her parents, wherever they went. Daniel was born in IN, date unknown.
2) Dau Delila SHAFFER, born abt 1833, OH married William CASSELL1850 Preble. William and Delila did
not leave the Preble/Montgomery Co OH area. Andrew was the son of Michael SHAFFER and Nancy MUNTZ.
He had two younger brothers Ira and Daniel Washington SHAFFER or SHEFFER. Probably more than a coincidence
that Michael owned land around Logansport, Cass Co Indiana.

- ALDEN, ANDREWS, BUCK,
GRIFFIN, MULLENS,
SIMONTON posted by James F. Pearson
on 08/12/99
- In my genealogy studies I have found a major connection to Wiota / Atlantic Iowa. Benjamin SIMONTON
and his wife Anne BUCK Simonton came from Cape Elizabeth Maine to Cass County in the 1850's at middle
age and died in the 1880's. I was told by someone a few years ago that they had seen the graves. Benjamin's
father was Thomas SIMONTON who married Mary ALDEN, a 5th generation ancestor of John ALDEN and Priscilla
MULLENS of the Mayflower. With all their children already adults a few came to Cass County with them
although not at the same time. One of Benjamin's and Anne's children was my Great Grandfather William
Luther SIMONTON. He first married Lucy ANDREWS who died young in the 1870's, I think in Cass County
because William was married a second time to Ella GRIFFIN in the1870's. They were married in Cass
County and she is my great grandmother. They eventually moved to Oregon. I would like to have a contact
who might help me research information on ANDREWS and GRIFFIN and more on SIMONTON. I have a great
lineage on both the SIMONTON and ALDEN lines. Simonton helped found Cape Elizabeth Maine in the early
1700's. Thanks.

- COOPER, MORGAN, PAINE,
PENCE posted by Richard A. Pence
on 08/27/99
- I am looking for _any_ information on a PENCE family that may have lived in Cass County in the
1870s, where some of the children were reportedly born. Members of this family also reportedly were
in Adams County and in Montgomery County; a bio of one of the children says they lived in Montgomery
County. The father's name was reportedly Samuel PENCE, the mother Fannie PAINE, both natives of Ohio;
the mother is said to have been born in 1840 and died in 1876 in Montgomery or Cass Counties. Known
children (said to be a total of 11): George, Milton, Melvin, Alfred, possibly Henry or Harry, and
Laura and Estelle. They were born from early 1860s to early 1870s in Illinois and Iowa, with conflicting
birth years given in various later census records. George (born IL about 1865 in Cass County, *Illinois*)
went to El Paso, TX, where he prospered in the real estate business; Milton, born about 1860, moved
to Chicago, said to be a jeweler there; Melvin, born 1870 in Iowa, found living with another family
in Cass County in 1880, moved to St. Louis. Alfred, born 1872, reportedly Adams County, Iowa, found
as an adopted child of Cecil D. COOPER in Montgomery County in 1880, moved to Sanborn County, SD,
he married Ann Alverta MORGAN near Wiota, Cass County, in Feb. 1891, living Cass County in 1900; Henry
Harry, born about 1868, possibly in Cass County; moved to Chicago, where he was an electrician. It
appears the loss of the mother led to this family being split up and, eventually, widely separated.
There are descendants in George in El Paso - who have no knowledge of his siblings, and descendants
of Harry in Indiana and Illinois who have a similar lack of knowledge. South Dakota descendants know
about Milton, George, Melvin and the two daughters mentioned above; they also knew where George, Milton
and Melvin lived. George's bio in a 1915 Texas history gives details on his parents (unknown to other
branches) and places where the family lived, but does not name any of the reported 11 children. A
fascinating puzzle that I am trying to help various widely spread descendants put back together. Can
you help? Richard A. Pence, 3211 Adams Ct, Fairfax, VA 22030 Voice 703-591-4243 Fax 703-385-0971 Pence

- There were Two brothers surnamed PRENTICE who were born in Scotland. The names of their parents
are not yet known, and it is likely that there were also sisters whose names are not yet known. The
brothers both emmigrated to America from Uddingston, Scotland about 1848-1855, they were: (1) John
PRENTICE, b. c. 1822, Uddingston, Scotland, immigrated to America about 1848 and died in 1870, and
(2) Charles Edgar PRENTICE, b. c. 1822, Uddingston, Scotland. Charles Edgar PRENTICE may have settled
in Delaware Co., IA where his brother, John, lived. He married Sarah (maybe LEES). They had at least
one son (and probably more children), Lawton W. PRENTICE, b. c. 1844-1850. Lawton PRENTICE married,
first, Emma Jane. Children: i. Charles E.[4] Prentice, born, 2 Aug 1873. ii. Marion O. Prentice, born,
6 Nov 1876. LAWTON m., second, Lucy Ellen LEES and had at least one son: iii. Charles PRENTICE, born
30 Nov 1889 at Anita, Cass Co., IA. The 1900 Anita, Cass, IA census shows him living with his uncle,
Henry LEE. LAWTON married, apparently third, Margaret/Maggie, based on the 1920 census for Monroe
Co., WI which shows her b. c. 1860, in WI.

- KLEFMAN - MICHAELS - ALBERTS: I am researching the KLEFMAN (KLEFMANN) name. I am particularly interested
in finding information on Henry (Heinrich) KLEFMANN. My great grandfather Henry came from Prussia
abt.1869-70. He married an Auguste DREGER. We think that she came from Prussia abt. 1854-5. My grandfather,
Fred (Friedrick Ernst Heinrich KLEFMANN's) christening papers indicate he was born in Atlantic, Ia
29 January 1877. He married Flora Belle MICHAELS in Atlantic, Ia on 26 February 1902. My father, Harold
KLEFMAN, was born in Atlantic, 28 January 1907. My uncle's birth certificate, Ross KLEFMAN, says he
was born in Cumberland, Ia. I have been told that I may be related to the KLEFMAN's in Ohio but correspondence
by phone and letter has been to no avail. The story told about my gr. grandfather Henry is that he
left home one morning and never returned. No one ever knew what happened to him. My father told me
that when my grandfather, Fred, was a young man, he received a phone call stating there was a very
sick man claiming to be Henry KLEFMAN. By the time my grandfather, Fred, got there, the man had aready
died. I don't know where there was as my father told me the train station, and my cousin says it was
a hospital. My gr. grandmother Augusta must have gotten a divorce as she remarried a John ALBERTS.
I wonder if you can give me some help or clues where to research for this information? Thank-you.
