Chronology

  • January, 1861 Cass County Gazette, established by J.C. Brown and published at Lewis, making it the first county newspaper. In the Summer of 1863 the paper passed into the hands of J. M. Holaday, and its politics changed from Democratic to Republican.

  • 1864 Cass County Messenger, established in Lewis by H.C. Johnson of Atlantic. Johnson moved his office from Lewis to Atlantic in the spring of 1869. In 1871-2 J. R. Morris, Jr. joined Mr. Johnson in publishing the Messenger, and in 1873 J. H. Willey joined the partnership. The paper was eventually renamed the Atlantic Messenger, published by Johnson and Willey.

  • Summer 1869 Daily Free Press, established by Upham & Sibley, with E. O. Upham serving as editor. The paper suspended in July or August, 1870.

  • February 1871 The Atlantic Telegraph, with Lafe Young as owner and editor, was established in Atlantic

  • 1877 Anita Times, established by Charles F. Chase

  • 1879 The Atlantic Daily Telegraph was established.

  • August 11, 1880 Cass County Democrat, successor of the Anita Times, was first published in Atlantic. This later became the News-Telegraph

  • May 1874 Cap Sheaf, established in Atlantic by D.M. Harris, of Missouri Valley. Harris sold the paper to James Pugh in the Fall of 1875.

  • Fall 1875 Norwestern Journal, established by James Pugh as a temperance paper. The Journal was supended in the Spring of 1876 and the Cap Sheaf revived by J. A. Crawford and others, but the revived paper only lasted a few weeks.

  • December 1876 Atlantic Democrat, was started by Golden Bros. & Collins after they took possession of the Cap Sheaf office. Chares Collins served as editor. The paper lasted only three months.

  • May 1880 The Lewis Independent was established by J.B. Erion. This was later changed to The Standard.

  • July 1882 The Marne Message was established by O.C. Bates. It was later called The Marne Free Press.

  • December 1883 The Anita Tribune was established by Sherm F. Meyers.

  • February 1880 The Griswold Advocate was established by Ragsdale & Scott.
