MATHEW SHEPPERD was born in Ontario, Canada, on May 10, 1845. He married Elizabeth Keyes in 1873, and the couple moved to Audubon County, Iowa in 1875, and settled on a farm one mile west of Brayton. In 1883, the couple purchased a sixty-two acre farm in Section 36 in southeastern Brighton Township. In addition to his farming enterprises, he was an accomplished veterinarian.
