DEWITT C. CADY was born in Oneida County, New York, on May 23, 1842. His father was B. F. Cady, who brought his family to Cass County from New York in 1870 and settled on a tract of land in Section 35 of Brighton Township, including the northeast quarter of the section. B. F. Cady died in December, 1879, his widow moved to Atlantic, and Dewitt took over the farm. Dewitt C. Cady taught school in Washington Township School District No. 1 in the northeast corner of the township in 1871 and for several years afterward. D. C. Cady had married Hattie A. Owens in 1869 while still living in New York state.
