WILLIAM F. ALTIG was born in Mason County, Kentucky, on August 14, 1832 and moved with his family to Menard County, Illinois, in 1837. He married Mary A. King in 1856 and they had two children, William and Maria. Mary died in 1863. He then remarried to E. J. Short, resulting in five children - James, Mary, Effie, John and Jerome. The Altig's came to Cass County in the Spring of 1864 and purchased a 240-acre farm on Section 33 of Brighton Township. Later he owned 400 acres and lots in the Town of Marne prior to his death.
