CHAPTER VII.
PYMOSA TOWNSHIP (CONT'D).

Ivy Border Divider

PIONEERS OF PYMOSA.

In the early 'fifties when the first settlers entered the territory of what is now Pymosa township, the country was included in Cass township, which was coextensive with the present county. The Byrd family were the first to permanently locate, James L. building a cabin on section 30 in the summer of 1852, and as the different members were among the earliest of the gentile pioneers of Cass county they are mentioned in detail in the general history.

In the fall of that year James Kincade, coming from Indiana on a western prospecting trip, brought up in Pymosa township, where he settled, began improvements and remained until the time of his death, two or three years after his arrival. His family scattered into the farther States of the West.

Jefferson Goodale came to Cass county July 17, 1853, and during that year entered land in section 6, of what is now Benton township. From that time until 1856 he entered various tracts until he was the owner of not less than 1,500 acres in the townships of Benton and Pymosa. He also entered much land for other parties in both Cass and Audubon counties. The homestead on which he settled and resided until his death, October 2, 1882, was on the northwest quarter of the southwest quarter of section 6, Benton township. At one time he was the owner of the entire section. For many years before coming to Cass county Mr. Goodale was a prosperous farmer of Allen county, Ind., and at his death left a large family of married children, some of whom were residents of Pymosa and Atlantic townships.
