His father died when John was an infant, and his mother dying in 1866, John was left alone with an uncle...Dix Ryan, with whom he lived until he became of age. He then began farming, and was so engaged in Stark county, Illinois until 1878, when he came to Fremont county, Iowa, where he bought a farm in Locust Grove township. He sold his place in 1882, and came to Cass county, and bought a farm of one hundred and sixty acres of nice land in Cass township, where he now resides, and has one of the finest places in the county. Mr. Garner was married in Stark county, Illinois on the 29th of March, 1871, to Miss Lydia Himes, a native of that county. Her mother, Maria Himes, died in July, 1884 at the residence of Mr. Garner, and her father died in Fremont county in 1881. Mr. and Mrs. Garner have three children...Della M., Lillie and Minnie.
