Index of German Language Obituaries from the Waverly Phoenix 1892 - 1924

Note: There are no obituaries for surnames beginning with X and Y.

Elvira Hebell and Connie Wedemeier worked with the Waverly Public Library for about 2-1/2 years to extract almost 2,800 German language obituaries from the Waverly Phoenix.  Copies of the obituaries are available for public use at the Waverly Public Library in a three-volume set that includes an alphabetized index with names, cross references, spouses, maiden names, and the issue date of the newspaper in which an obituary was found. We have permission to reproduce the index on this site, but it may not be shared in any other electronic, digital, or paper form.

To obtain copies of individual obituaries from the library:

Send the name and number of each obituary for which you want a copy (e.g., "German Obit #15 for Albrecht, Johann C." and "German Obit #146 for Beisner, Carl Wilhelm") along with $2.00 for each obituary to

Waverly Public Library
1500 W. Bremer Avenue
Waverly, IA 50677-2836

Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

If you do not read German, you can ask the library to give you the name of someone who can translate the original for a fee, or you can arrange for someone in your local community to do the translation. The obituaries in red print have been translated into English. In those cases you will receive the English translation unless you request the original German version.
