Dyer Family History
Generation 1
Luke Dyer

Luke Dyer b. 1760 Misspillion Hundred, Kent Co, Delaware d. 1840 Clay Co, Indiana buried on a ridge in the Dyer Cemetery, there has been no stone found for Luke or Sarah at this cemetery

m. Sarah "Sally" Barnes 1788 Delaware b. Delaware d. 1836 Cass Twp, Clay Co, Indiana buried Dyer Cemetery

Luke was issued a coat, hat, and shoes by Major D Patten, D Regiment, he enlisted May 13, 1780 and served under Lt. Daniel P Cox, D Regiment

Luke was in Hall's Regiment Co D in the Revolutionary War. On June 13, 1780 he returned his war items

Sometime in the year 1818 Luke sold his land in Guilford County, North Carolina and moved his family to the vicinity of Monroe Co, Indiana

1820 he came to Cass Township, Clay Co, Indiana not far from the town of Poland with this sons Caleb and Luke Jr, Clay County was part of Owen County, Indiana until the late 1820's.

Luke Dyer owned and operated in partnership a small distillery with a man named Samuel Stigler

Luke Dyer and his wife Sarah were buried in the Dyer cemetery on land that Luke Dyer owned

Luke Dyer has seemed to elude the best of the best of a researcher... As for land records the only land records found with the US General Land Records of the US Bureau Department is that of the land in Clay County, Indiana... It is also sure as to what Regiment that Luke served in. It is more likely that he served Hall's Regiment under Lt Daniel Cox.. As you can tell the record of service length was brief but short.. No details as to why he served such a short time..

There has been no marriage record for of Luke Dyer and Sarah Barnes.. But belief is that they were married in Misspillion, Kent County, Delaware... Investigation of Tax records for that time period are warranted to find his placement in the state of Delaware as to also where his first born child Zipporah was born.

As to the fate of the Dyer Cemetery, it is a sad one: Read listing below....

Clay County Indiana
Dyer Cemetery

The Dyer cemetery was located in Clay County IN, Cass Township, about 1 mile West of Poland IN. This would be near the central part of the township in the year 1830. It was located on a hill in a wheat field Northeast of Candle Corner on State Road 42.

Harriet Mead of Nice, Calif sent the names of the burials in 1980.

When the cemetery was visited in 1995 to check on the names on the stones, they found the cemetery had been plowed under and the stones were all broken and wheat growing in the area. The last information we have about Indiana is if the cemetery is 100 yrs old.
