UNCLE LEM DAVIS.
L. P. Davis passed away Monday night. His death had been expected for several days. He passed into an unconsious state on Saturday from which he never rallied. Mr. Davis suffered a stroke of paralysis of the left side several weeks ago. He rallied for a time, but later began to sslowly decline until death came to his release.
Lemuel P. Davis was born at Oakeland, Mich., June 4, 1829. He had lived to the good old age of 79 years, 5 months and 6 days. Mr. Davis came to the county forty-two years ago, first locating at Belmond. In 1869 he moved to Clarion to take up his duties as county clerk. He was thus engaged for ten consecutive years. During the following seven years he held the position of deputy treasurer. He was then elected Justice of the r peace and city and school treasurer, which positions he held to the day of his death, having been re-elected justice last Tuesday. Mr. Davis had been'a member of the Masonic lodge for nearly forty years. He was one of the charter members of the Clarion order. He was truly a pioneer citizen, having sceen Clarion grow from a village of twenty people to a nice little city of over two thousand. For a man of his
age in years and flesh he was very active and maintained an office down town up to the time he was stricken down 'with
paralysis. Mr. Davis was familiarly known all over the county as Uncle Lem. He was everybody's friend and everybody was his friend. He was a good man and he lived an honest and upright life.
Mr. Davis was married to Miss Hannah Weeks at Wood's Corner, Mich., April 5, 1871 fifty-seven years ago last April. Their golden wedding was
celebrated seven years ago. The good wife has proved a very faithful help mate to her husband in the long years an they have walked life's pathway together. During the last sickness of the husband the wife's sympathetic nature and cheerful disposition was most fully exemplified. In the loss of the husband and father, Mrs. Davis
and daughter, Miss Alice, have the will sympathy of all.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Congregational church conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. II. Olmstead, after which the Masonic order will take
charge. Interment will be made in of Evergreen cemetery.
