MRS. EMELINE HILLS. Emeline Shepard was born in Wayne county, N. Y., February 2nd, 1828, and died February 12th, 1898, at Oakland Valley, Iowa.
She moved with her family to Illinois in 1848, and in 1852 was married to Mr. R. E. Hills, who died in 1860, leaving her with five small children. She bravely took up the burden laid upon her and by unceasing industry and economy provided for them. As a mother and grand-mother she was untiring in her devotion, entirely forgetful of self where their welfare or interests were concerned, and was happiest when doing something for their comfort and pleasure, the last act of her life being to finish a stocking for one of her little grand-children. She united with the Methodist church at the age of nineteen years and remained a consistent member to the end. Her children all survive her and were in attendance at the funeral. All the grand-children, twenty in number, survive her excepting little Carl. At about 7 o'clock Saturday evening she complained of severe pain in the head and passed away half an hour later of cerebral apoplexy. Funeral services were held at the Oakland Valley church Monday forenoon and the remains brought
here on the afternoon express and taken to the home of F. C. Hartshorn, where they were viewed by relatives and friends for the last time, after which they were tenderly laid to rest in the Clarion cemetery. Deceased was the mother of Mrs. F. C. Hartshorn, Mrs. J. A. Elliott and F. N. Hills, and during visits to her children here in the past had become quite well acquainted with many of our citizens, by all of whom she was highly esteemed. Such, in brief, is the history of a noble woman who has finished life's work and been called to her reward-loved and honored by all who knew her.
