James Bergen
16 July 1870 ---- 21 August 1939

Dows - Funeral services for James Bergen, 69, who died at his home north of Popejoy early Monday after having taken strychnine, were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Presbyterian church by the Rev. R. A. Brough. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery.

Mr. Bergen was born at Ohio, Bureau County, Illinois July 16, 1870. When 19 he came to Franklin County and had ever since lived near Popejoy and Dows. The last 36 years of his life were spent on the farm on which he died.

He was married December 20, 1899 to Caroline Johnson, who preceded him in death. Their three children, Mrs. Arthur Gardner of Greenfield, Mrs. Raymond Nolte of Escondido, California and Maynard Bergen of Popejoy survive. He was married again on January 1, 1935 to Mrs. Laura Petre who also survives him.
