One of Earliest Pioneers Died Last Week at the Age of 98 Years
Mary Jane Jenkins was born near Gainesboro, Jackson County, Tennessee, July 5, 1832. She died at her home near Manly, July 8, 1930, at the age of 98 years and 3 days. At the age of 20 she was married to Shelby Flatt. To this union three children were born, all of which have preceded her in death, two dying in infancy, one daughter died in 1929. They moved from Tennessee to Mississippi before the Civil War. Her husband was killed there. Their home was near the battle field of Shilo and Corinth. After Grant opened the Tennessee River she moved to Ashly, Ill., where she was married to George Hayter. To this union four children were born, two of these preceded her in death. They moved from Illinois to Wisconsin, where they lived for a few years. In the year of 1870 they came to Iowa and settled on a farm near Manly, where she spent the last 60 years of her life. She is survived by two sons, George at home and Roland of Mason City. Her husband died in 1892. Her parents were from Virginia, they moved to Tennessee soon after the revolutionary War. Her grandfather served seven years under Washington. Her father was under Gen. Jackson in the battle of New Orleans in the war of 1812. She had three brothers in the Civil War, two in the southern army and one in the northern army. Early in life she was baptized. She loved her Savior and has gone to meet the Christ she loved. May the spirit of this kind mother be a blessing to her boys and where their treasure is their heart will be also and when the curtain of our life shall fall, may we see thee face to face in thy home on high. Services were held at her home, Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. James Miller. Burial was made at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. She is survived by two grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. She was a kind mother, a good friend, loved by all that knew her. Her deeds of kindness were many. She will be missed, but not forgotten. Manly Signal, Manly, Iowa, Thursday, July 17, 1930, p.1
