OBITUARY

Russell William Morgan, aged twenty-one, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. R. Morgan of Moline, Ill., was drowned in Lake Michigan by the pier at Jackson Park, Chicago, while visiting the neighborhood of their former home there.

His body was recovered on May 30th, and on June 2nd was brought by his brief {sic} stricken parents, and his aunt, Mrs. J. W. Holmes, to their childhood’s home at Hesper, Iowa, where on June 4th funeral services were held at the residence of his grandmother, Mrs. Clara Battey.

The able sermon by Dr. Willett of Decorah and the beautiful prayer of Rev. H. C. Carter of Hesper were very comforting; and also the hymn “Nearer, my God, to Thee,” as sung by Arlie Griswold and Ray Hiatt.

The casket was almost hidden under the roses and carnations, loving tokens from the family and sympathizing friends, while a large panel of callas and roses held his name.

Though always a reserved youth, Russell had made many friends during his vacation visits here, and six of the young men acted as pall-bearers when he was laid to rest in the quiet Hesper cemetery, where flowers and birds and waving branches whisper of a creator’s endless love; while the sympathy of the whole community follows the bereaved family in their sorrows.
