John J. Macal passed away Thursday morning at his home south of town. His death was due to apoplexy. On the Thursday morning he went about his usual duties, and his wife, thinking that he had been outside too long, went in search, and found him dead in the corn crib. John Macal was born in Mazice, Bohemia, July 4, 1833. In his early boyhood he came to America, settling at Dubuque, Iowa, where in 1852 he was united in marriage to Miss Barbara Mashek. In the spring of 1870 they came to Winneshiek county, and have since been residents here. Beside his wife the deceased pioneer leaves behind him one son and one daughter, John B. Macal of near Ridgeway and Mrs. F. P. Chizek of this place. One daughter, Mrs. J. A. Dvorak, has passed to the beyond. Mr. Macal was known as a man of honor and integrity, and enjoyed the respect and esteem of everyone. The funeral was held from the St. John’s church on Saturday at 9:00 o’ clock, with interment in the Catholic cemetery. The pall bearers were Edwin, Maurice, John and William Macal, John and George Chizek all grandchildren. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Parker of La Crosse, Wis., Mrs. Helene of Montevideo, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. John Chizek of Clear Lake, Maurice Macal of Austin, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Wenzel Mashek, Mr. and Mrs. James Sobolik, John Mashek, James Mashek and Mrs. A. Fisher, all of Calmar.
