Obituary: Last Monday, April 13th, came the sad news by telegram about the accident that befell Mathias Remta at Pittsburgh, Pa., April 11th, one of our old citizens about 73 years old. On Tuesday morning, April 7th, he started from Spillville to one of our nearest towns to take the train for Ford City to visit Rev. John Marshalek, one of our former priests. On Wednesday morning he arrived at Chicago and spent a day with his nephew V. Remta. From there he took the train for Pittsburgh, Pa., arriving there Friday at 2 p. m. Afterwards his son John received a message that his father had been killed at Pittsburg, and he left for that place, his cousin V. Remta accompanying him. They found his dead body at the Pittsburgh morgue in a mangled condition. The report was that he was found dead on the railroad tracks about a mile from Pittsburgh. He was identified by a card found in his vest pocket having the address of the nephew he visited in Chicago. It is known that when he visited at Chicago he had $40 in his possession and only $2 was found on his body. It seems rather strange that his ticket for Ford City was punched until Saturday evening, as though he had passed through the gates to the train. Mathias Remta was born in Bohemia and came to this country when quite young and has lived in this neighborhood ever since. The remains were brought here early Friday morning from Calmar. The funeral occurred the same day at 10 o’clock at the St. Wenceslaus church. Interment was made at the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Ballon officiated. Anton Balik was funeral director. The pall bearers were Michael Simon, T. Malek, J. C. Stadt, J. Frana, John Shimek and Thos. Taylor. The deceased was escorted by the Western Bohemian Catholic society of which he was a member. He leaves to mourn his loss three children, Rose, Matt and John, all at home. The grief stricken family have the sincere sympathy of their many friends in their sad bereavement.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Jan. 3, 1839. The name on his gravestone is Matej.
