Laura Mae (Baker) Boice was born in Decorah, IA on June 21, 1936. Laura was a lifelong resident of Winneshiek County in which she made many friends over the years. In the early days she lived on Canoe Creek and walked to old Canoe Public School #2 with her sister Lorraine and close friend, Jenny. When reminiscing of those days, Laura often joked that kids would always walk to school unless their parents bought them a pony to ride.

Like many from the Great Depression and World War II eras, Laura had a strong work ethic. She first worked at McClain Farm and soon after met the love of her life, Dean. Laura married Dean Thomas Boice on Sept. 5, 1953, in Winona, MN. Laura and Dean had four children and built a life on a livestock farm north of Decorah. Throughout the years Laura worked on the farm and held various jobs at local small businesses including Knobbe Hardware, Norb's True Value, Johnson-Bohr gas station, Usgaard & Smith, and Decorah Greenhouse. When Laura wasn’t working, she enjoyed helping others and volunteering at local events, such as Bluffton Store’s Light Up the Bluff. Laura was the Secretary for the Winneshiek County Republican Party for over 30 years. In her later years, Laura expanded her horizons and took classes for polka, square dance, and ballroom dancing. She enjoyed going to water aerobics and socializing with friends and old classmates. She had a deep love for her grandchildren and took pleasure in visiting with them.

At the end she was cared for by her son Ronald and his wife Dorothy. She was thankful for the staff at Gundersen Health System-Decorah Clinic, as they made her feel comfortable.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Boice. Parents, Sydney and Edna Baker. Her in-laws, Laverne and Eva Baker. Her siblings: Ruth Barth, Paul Baker, Harold Baker, Cecilia Dawley, David Baker. Her son, Donald “Buck” Boice, and her grandson, Brian Phillips. Half-brother: Raymond Baker.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Ronald and Dorothy Boice. Daughters: Bev Phillips and Joan Boice. Twin sister: Lorraine Baker. and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
