Wayne Elwood Quass was born on November 28, 1944 to Albert Everett Quass and Esther Charlotte (Lotvedt) Quass. At that time, the family lived on Albert’s parents’ (Colbin and Johanna Quass) farm in Dover Township. When Wayne was two weeks old, the family moved to Esther’s parents’ (Severt and Johanna Lotvedt) farm south of Ossian, where Wayne grew up enjoying the animals. After graduating high school, Wayne enlisted into the National Guard for six years.
In 1967, Wayne moved with his parents to the Andrew Nelson Farm. On January 26, 1969, Wayne married Phyllis Ann Wolf and made their new home on the Bennie and Mable Nesvik Farm. Wayne loved living there and he enjoyed farming with his brother, Dale. Wayne milked cows on the home farm. While living at the Nesvik farm, Sheila (1970) and Sheryl (1972) were born. In 1965, the Quass Brothers had purchased the Ed and Arlene Wenthe Farm. While cultivating corn on the Wenthe Bottom, Wayne noticed that the Myron and Clarice Helgerson Farm would work well with the Wenthe Farm. Wayne realized that it was time to be on his own farm, so he stopped to visit with Myron and Clarice and found out that they were ready to move to town. So Wayne, Phyllis, Sheila, and Sheryl moved farther south to the Helgerson Farm around Christmas time in 1975, where the family had beef, hogs, and a crop farm of their own. Two additional children joined the family, Brian in 1976 and Sandra in 1979. During the Farm Crisis of the 1980, Wayne with the help of a friend’s advice started to feed lambs. Wayne enjoyed working with his lambs and was happy not to have to work with pigs anymore. Wayne had five children: Cheri Rae, Sheila Kay, Sheryl Ann, Brian Wayne, and Sandra Marie. After retiring from farming, Wayne enjoyed going to many of his grandkids’ activities and riding the gator around the neighborhood. Wayne was a lifelong member of the Stavanger Church, where many of his immediate family and cousins attended.
