Geraldine “Geri” Ney (age 82) of West Union passed away June 14, 2024.

She was born Sept. 8, 1942, in Waterloo. Geri (named at birth as Sandra Jean Olmstead) was a child of God through adoption as a reflection of God’s love for orphan children and was rehomed to the Waverly Children’s Hospital where she was lovingly chosen by her parents Glen and Kristi Crain of Monona, at 18 months old. Geri was baptized at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Monona.

Geri attended Monona Farmersburg school and actively participated in Band by playing a saxophone and at an early age enjoyed sports by playing softball and basketball. Amongst her high school pursuit, she also enjoyed roller skating at Art’s Roller Rink in Ossian, IA. It is there where she met Stanley (Skip) Ney in 1957.

Skip and Geri were married in September of 1959 and started their life on the farm in rural Ossian. To their union, four children were born to bless their lives, Kimberly, Mike, Lynn, and Mark. In 1967 their eldest daughter, Kimberly, was killed in an auto accident and became a child of God in heaven and forever in our hearts on Earth.

Geri was an active member of Stavanger Lutheran Church and honorably served as a teacher and a Superintendent for 11 years teaching the gospel to the school age children of the church. She also participated in different office capacities with the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Churches of America).

Geri enjoyed different career opportunities throughout her life with Browns Department store and eventually transitioning to Atwood where she proudly retired. After retirement Geri continued to enjoy her career options with Elaines and Wendy’s on Water in Decorah and then eventually moving to Old Mill Floral in West Union where she excelled in her passion for flowers and gardening.

Geri often reflected on all her friends and family starting with their card club who met on a regular basis for a competitive game of Euchre. Later Geri found enjoyment with the Red Hat ladies, and most recently her group of friends known as the Coffee Clutch for coffee and a little gossip.

Survivors include her loving husband Skip, Mike (Vicki) Ney of North Liberty, Lynn (Mario) Sanders of Madison Wis., and Mark (Denise) Ney of West Union; grandchildren: Nick (Echo) of Anna Texas, Dylan (Taylor) Ney of Cedar Rapids, Chase (Hailey) Ney of North Liberty, Tremaine Robinson of Madison WIs., Marlonda Sanders of Cedar Rapids, Brady (Kayla) Ney of West Union, Allison (Daniel Gibbs) Ney of West Union, Emma Ney of West Union, and Madyson Ney of West Union; and great grandchildren: Ashton, Taelynn, Hane, Isaiah and Zion.

Preceded in death is daughter Kimberly Ney, parents Glen and Kristi Crain; parents-in-law, Milfred and Emma Ney; brother-in-law, Lyle Ney.

Service and visitation will be held at Stavanger Lutheran Church in Ossian. Visitation is June 28 from 5 to 7 p.m., and service June 29 at 11 a.m.
