Audrey “Joanne” Gregg, age 93, of Burr Oak, IA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in West Union, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church, 2358 – 360th Street, Burr Oak, IA, with Deacon Lisa Kammerer presiding.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Tuesday morning.

Burial will be at the Fjeldberg Lutheran Cemetery in Huxley, IA, Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.

Joanne was born on September 18, 1930, in Des Moines Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Margaret Birkestrand of Cambridge, Iowa. Her school days began at White Oak Consolidated, located south of Cambridge, Iowa where she attended school for 11 years, and when it closed its doors in 1947, she finished her senior year in Huxley, Iowa and graduated in 1948. Following school, she was briefly employed by John Deere in Ankeny, Iowa. In 1949 she was united in marriage to Wilfred (Mickey) Gregg. Together they farmed all their married life, originally in the central Iowa area and later in 1971 near Burr Oak, Iowa until Mickey’s sudden death in 1985. She then moved to Hesper, Iowa and began working as a bookkeeper in a feed store for a brief time. Joanne was then employed by Luther College for several years in the information and security departments until her retirement. At a time during her employment at Luther College she moved from Hesper to Decorah, Iowa. Joanne enjoyed spending time with family and friends and with her church activities, as well as rosemaling and decorative painting, playing cards, golfing, and bowling. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and ISU Cyclone fan.

Survivors include her children Wayne (Mary Jo) Gregg of Flagstaff, AZ, David (Joyce) Gregg of Fayette, IA and Karen (Dennis) Christopherson of Fairfax, IA. Grandchildren include Dr. Andrew Gregg of Flagstaff, AZ, Dr. Wesley Gregg (Allison) of Flagstaff, AZ, Meredith (Josh) Brood of Cedar Falls, IA, Catherine (Andy) Terrell-Rodriguez of San Antonio, TX, Crystal (Eric) Kallem of Dallas Center, IA, Dr. Melissa Christopherson (Sean Smith) of Verona WI, John (Jenifer) Christopherson of Cedar Rapids IA. Great-grandchildren include William and Jackson Gregg, Sage Brood, Lara Kallem, Aidan, Kellan and Bronson Smith, and Joslyn and Jax Christopherson.

Other survivors include her sisters-in-law Marilyn Gregg of Clarion, IA and Clarice Gregg of Minnesota and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wilfred and her parents Albert and Margaret Birkestrand, her mother-in-law and father-in-law Clarence and Gertrude Gregg, her sister Stella Carley, brothers John, Arnold, and Clifford, and her brothers-in-law, Willis, Delmyr, Thomas, John, Charles, and Gary Hessel, and sisters-in-law Lois Birkestrand, Maxine Birkestrand, Lois Ann Hovik, Joyce Gregg, and Mima Hessel.
