Marion Helen (Deeny) Broghammer, 91, peacefully passed away at Stoney Brook Village Thursday, May 16, 2024 surrounded by her loving children.

Marion was born August 18, 1932 at home in Jackson Junction, Iowa. She was the beloved child of Francis “FP” and Loretta “Laura” (Nienhaus) Deeny. She attended the Waucoma, Iowa schools, graduating from Waucoma High School in 1950. Her first job was at Lynch Grocery in Waucoma, from 8th grade through college. After graduating high school, she attended Mount Mercy Junior College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, graduating in 1952 with her degree in teaching. She taught 3rd grade at Blairstown, Iowa from 1952-1956.

She married Charles P. “Chuck” Broghammer October 12, 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Waucoma. They made their home in West Union, Iowa. After staying at home with their children for many years, she became a paraprofessional at North High, in both the West Union and Hawkeye elementaries, from 1972 – 2000. She also served her church, Holy Name Catholic Church, as Faith Formation coordinator from 1998-2014.

She is survived by her six children – Bernardine Bordignon (Greg), Robins, IA; Janice Rosauer (Gary), Gilbertville, IA; Joyce Friederich (Mike), Elgin, IA; William “Bill” Broghammer (Lori), Clear Lake, IA; Louise Basile (Sam), Rockford, IL, and Theresa Broghammer, Marion, IA. She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren – Natalie Milke (David), Lynette Hemann (Ben), Lisa Jones (Dan), Amy Krenz (Andy), Joe Rosauer (Allyse), Nick Rosauer (Kelsey), Amanda Nims (Luke), Ryan Friederich (Holly), Tyler Ishman (Samantha), Taylor Rooney (Jack), Emily Edwards (Josh), and Tricia Pitts (Darrien). She will be lovingly remembered by her 18 great-children, who were the highlight of her days.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Chuck, who passed on in 2013. They both died on May 16, reuniting after 11 years. She is also preceded in death by her brothers, Bernard Deeny, Cornell Deeny, Donald Deeny, and Charles Deeny, and sisters, Patricia Balk, Marcella Stallman, and Germaine Gibney; by her in-laws, Mary Margaret Schmidt, Anna Louise Smith, and Carolyn Leehy, as well as nephews, Michael Mann, Michael Leehy, Gary Deeny, Dan Deeny, and David Deeny along with her niece, Catherine Schmidt.

Her Catholic faith was the center of her life, as shown through her vast involvement in the church. She was a member of the Holy Name Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of America, and West Union Women’s Fire Auxiliary. In her later years, she found comfort and many friendships in her second home – Stoney Brook Village. She will be remembered as a caring and compassionate person, who was always willing to listen or share a laugh with all who crossed her path.

Memorials in Marion’s honor may be given to Mt. Calvary Cemetery, West Union or Stoney Brook Village Assisted Living Theater Enhancement, West Union.

A Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a 3:30 pm Rosary on Monday, May 20, 2024 at Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home in West Union, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before mass at the church on Tuesday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, Iowa with Rev. Ralph Davis and Rev. Jim Brokman as Co-Celebrants.

Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery next to her beloved husband Charles in West Union, Iowa.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Clermont, Iowa is assisting the family with services.
