Carolyn Dianne Flaskerud was born August 12,1934 to Horace E. and Vivian L. Brickner of Decorah, Iowa. She was the youngest of their children: Marjorie (Chuck Johnson), Nancy (Al Gwynne), and David (Audrey). She attended Decorah Community Schools, graduating in 1952. Carolyn did bookkeeping for her dad at SE Brickner & Son store.

October 18, 1952, she married Herman R. Flaskerud at the First United Methodist Church in Decorah. They started their married life on a Fillmore Co., MN farm where Herman did chores and worked for the Fillmore Co. Nursery. But soon they moved back to Decorah where relatives and friends helped them build a barn and a house on an acreage on Division St., on the edge of the fast-growing Minnowa Heights housing development. Their married life was active and purposeful. It revolved around work, home upkeep, family, friends, faith and enjoying their blessings. They stayed in this home, raising: two children, Herman “Jay” and Christy, several horses, other pets, a steer, a pig, a cow to milk and produce calves for beef, a large vegetable garden, pine trees, and a strawberry patch, but NO chickens. Carolyn was an excellent baker and cook and food preservationist, who made the most of resources and shared their abundance.

She was known for volunteerism, hospitality, and fun-loving activities including roller skating, horseback trail riding, Boy Scout and Girl Scout leadership, camping, square and ballroom dancing, shopping, and gardening. She loved all types of music and made it fun to do household chores while playing records, cassettes, and CD’s.

Carolyn served as treasurer of the Flaskerud Family Lag and Tri-County American Red Cross, helped with her class reunions, participated in Stephens Ministry and the Social Concerns Committee at First Lutheran Church where she helped the congregation get the Food Pantry established and successful.

She helped care for aging parents and aunt Lucile Price and saw them through illnesses and deaths and the closing and cleanup of their homes prior to their sales.

Carolyn worked various places in the community, selling World Book Encyclopedias, Darlings Drug Store, Decorah Newspapers, Frudden Lumber Company and in 1972, she joined Decorah State Bank (Community First / Bank of the West) as a teller, then Good Neighbors Club co-leader, and Customer Service Officer. She retired in spring of 1998 to take care of Herman and home. In 2012 they sold the acreage and purchased a house on River Street after 58 years in one location. Herman passed away on December 20, 2013, and Carolyn passed away on November 28, 2023.

She is survived by her son Jay (Yevette Rucker), granddaughters, Nita (Stacie Winchell), Kaya (Wade Crowe), and Jenna (James) Nuehring, and great grandchildren Josie, Kiara, and Avery. Also surviving are her daughter Christy (John) Hay, granddaughter Anna (Gregory) Collins and great granddaughters Lorelei Oetker and Erika Collins, sister-in-law Audrey Brickner, and many special nieces and nephews and their families.
