Mr. Bernard Hanken, 91 years old, died Saturday night at the home of his daughter Mrs. Mat Houdek in this city, after a brief illness. The cause of his death was old age. Mr. Hanken was born in Bosholt, Westphalia, Germany, Nov. 1, 1822. He came to this country in 1846 and settled in New York, where he resided until 1876 when he came to this county, where he has since lived. Mr. Hanken was married, twice, both marriage occurring in New York. He was first married to Miss Berardina Lammers, to which union were born two children, John of near Festina and Henry, deceased. His second wife was Miss Agnes Tettman, who also preceded him in death. To his second wife were born ten children, the six surviving being Mrs. Mary Rothmeyer of Restine, Mrs. Katherine Houdek of this city, Mrs. Agnes Kessler of Neillsville, Wis., William of Oelwein, Frank of St. Paul, Minn, and Mrs. Theressa Kleve of near Ossian, Joseph, Bernard, Frank and Anna, deceased. He also leaves to mourn his departure 47 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. The funeral took place at Festina to-day at 10 o’clock from St. Mary’s church. Father Rubley celebrated the requiem mass and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. The pall bearers were Messrs. Joseph and Henry Thuente, William and Fred Tekippe and Joseph and Dominic Bucheit. Mr. Hanken has a wide acquaintance who will deeply mourn his sudden demise.
