THE SILENT REAPER.
MRS. SARAH ROONEY.
On Thursday morning last, the 13th, at her home in the fourth ward, Mrs. Sarah Rooney passed away after an illness of several years, death being due to the infirmities of old age. Mrs. Rooney’s maiden name was Sarah Welch. She was born at WestPort, county Mayo, Ireland, in May, 1835, and came to America in her girlhood. For a time she resided in Pittsburgh where, in 1856, she was married and immediately came to Decorah to reside. Of four sons and two daughters born to her five survive. Her son James, who was a railroad engineer, died twenty-three years ago in Minneapolis. The surviving members of the family are Mary, Thomas and Edward of Decorah, Mrs. Rose Furness and Peter Rooney of West Superior. She is also survived by a step-son Owen Rooney of this city. Mr. Rooney died in September, 1869. The deceased was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic church and until age prevented she was a regular attendant at its services and a devout member. The funeral was held Saturday morning at 9 o’clock, Rev. John Hawe officiating and interment was made in the3 Catholic cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows her gravestone in St. Benedict Cemetery with her year of birth as 1836 which does not agree with the above. It also shows her maiden name spelled Welsh.
