OBITUARY.

Michael Bernatz died last Friday morning at his home in the 4th ward after an illness of only a week, death being due to heart failure.
Mr. Bernatz was born at Prairie du Chien Wis., in 1853. He practically grew up in the milling business, his father and older brothers being engaged in that occupation, and became expert at his trade. At the age of twenty-one he was head miller in his father’s mill at Newberg, Minn., and he was successively in charge at Chaska, Minn., and Fort Atkinson, and later at Algona. In 1884 he came to Decorah and for four years managed the Ice Cave mills. In 1888 he formed a partnership with his brother John and they bought the mill at Spillville which they operated until 1896 when he sold his interest to his brother and bought the mill at Eldorado. There he remained until about four years ago when, on the death of his wife, he sold out to his brother Matt and came to Decorah to live.
Mr. Bernatz was married on March 27, 1897, to Mary Christianson. Six children survive. He is also survived by his aged mother, six brothers and four sisters.
The funeral was held Monday, among those present being the following relatives and friends from out of town:--Mr. and Mrs. John Bernatz, Spillville, Mr. and Mrs. Arch. Gorden, Mabel, Minn., L. Bernatz, Ossian, George and Miss Clara Bernatz, Robert Stendel, Grant, Wm., and Peter Lauer and Gunder Peterson, Eldorado, Albert and Matt Bernatz, Cedar Rapids, B. C. Bernatz, Calmar.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Sept. 8. 1853 and died Jan 20, 1913; however, the date of death does not agree with it being a Friday. (probably Jan. 17, 1913)
