Walter W. Mull, Commander of World War I Barracks in Decorah and past Commander of the local American Legion and VFW Posts, died February 13 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital at the age of 81.
Mr. Mull, a native of Ohio, came to Decorah in 1960, and he and his wife, the former Ella Dybvik, lived at 201 E. Main. He had been employed as an auto and airplane mechanic at Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio for 19 years and also owned and operated a bakery and a garage in Harmony, Minn. before moving here.
A World War I veteran, he had served overseas with the United States Air Force.
Funeral services for Mr. Mull were conducted by Pastors Paul H. Christenson and George Ulvilden Friday, Feb. 15 at First Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Alvin Dybvik, Arthur Noble, Donald Patterson, Orval Dybvik, Lyle Noble and Arland Patterson.
Honorary pallbearers were Jack Callison, Ward Rima, C.W. Leikvold, Vlad Macha, Oscar Vick, Harry Grindeland, Juel Natvig, Julian Moe, Ralph Olson, William Rodenkirk, Donald Haugen and L.B. Mikkelson.
Mrs. Rolfe Haatvedt was organist and accompanied the congregation as they sang hymns. Mrs. Oscar Vick and Mrs. Victor Nordheim were in charge of floral memorials. Funeral arrangements were made by Steine Funeral Home.
Mr. Mull is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Arleen) Rima of Decorah; two grandchildren, three great grandchildren; a brother, Charles Mull of Richmond, Ind. and three sisters, Mrs. Russell Tilton, Hebron, Ohio, Mrs. Bertha Phillips of Bentonville, Ark. and Mrs. Ethel LaMar of Richmond, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mull and a daughter, Bertha Jean Callison who died October 31, 1962.
Mr. Mull was born June 27, 1892. He attended public school at Centerville, Ind. and also Purdue University. He was married March 31, 1920 in the Lutheran parsonage in Harmony and was a member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah.
