Death of Well Known Pioneer.

At his home in West Decorah after an illness of many weeks, John Foltz, one of the well known pioneers of the county, and a resident of Decorah for many years, passed away peacefully to his long rest.

Mr. Foltz was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, Feb. 11, 1830, and departed this life May 31, 1910, at the advanced age of 79 years, three months and twenty days.

In 1852 he came to Stratford, Canada, and moved here on March 20, 1859. He was married to Miss Bertha Augusta Sellman and came to Winneshiek county in 1860, settling on a farm in Hesper township, where he resided until 1892, when he moved to Decorah. His wife passed away Feb. 23, 1892. Of fourteen children eleven survive, four sons and seven daughters. They are: George, John and Fred of Hesper township, Will of Canoe township, Mrs. Carrie Woellstein of Cresco, Mrs. Ida Sylvester of Greene, Mrs. Emma Stabenow of Dougherty, Mrs. Mary Stinson of Ashland, Wis., Mrs. Anna Seidelman of St. Louis, Mo., and Miss Bertha, who is living at home. There are also thirty-four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The remains were taken to Locust for burial beside his wife, services being held in the Lutheran church, Rev. Schmidt officiating.

Mr. Foltz enjoyed a wide acquaintance in this section and died honored, respected and esteemed by his neighbors and acquaintances throughout the vicinity.
