Marian Esther was born on July 13, 1934 the daughter of Leonard and Anna (Rassmussen) Nelson at Forest City, Iowa. She was one of four children. She grew up living on Airport Road and graduated from Forest City High School. Following high school, she worked for Palace of Sweets which made peanut brittle by the tub full. She met her future husband at a funeral where Herb was a pallbearer along with Marian’s dad. Their love blossomed and they met again and started to write each other. Eleven months later they were united in marriage on Dec. 21, 1961 at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. To this union was born three children, Karen who only lived for six days, Sharon, and Darrin. After their marriage, they made their home in Highlandville where Herb owned a farm. In the late sixties, they moved their family to Mason City where they became lifelong residents, living in the same home they bought when they moved.

Some of her favorite things to do include shopping, always reading novels, tending her flower gardens and working jigsaw puzzles.
Marian was said to be born to be a grandmother. She often and for many years would babysit the grandchildren until they could talk, before she would let them go to day care or preschool. She was even in temper and never was judgmental. In their early years, they would go dancing and out to eat but family was her first priority.

Those surviving Marian is her husband with whom she would have celebrated on the 21st of this month their fifty-second anniversary, her daughter Sharon Amundson and husband John Flores, and Darrin Amundson all of Mason City, six grandchildren, Ryan and his wife Chelsea Amundson, Katie and her husband Jack Klemesrud, Alyssa Fullerton and her fiancé Derek Wentworth, Taylor Fullerton, Olivia, Annika, Benjamin, and Ella Amundson, and great-grandchildren Carter, Kenna, and Lydia Klemesrud, Ryker Amundson, and Ayden Decker, along with her surviving sister Ruth Kruta, Fargo, N.D.

Her parents, daughter Karen Elaine, one sister Helen Bowman, and brother Chris Nelson and two brothers-in-law, Curtis and Bennie Amundson preceded her in death.
