Asle Severson's Death Leaves 9 Veterans in Co.

Severson Was Last Civil War Soldier Who Went From Winneshiek County

Asle Severson died Monday, Oct. 27, 1930, on his farm in Canoe twp, at the age of 87 years and four months. Death was due to old age. He had been in bed 5 months. The funeral was held Friday, with burial in the Big Canoe cemetery, Rev. T.O. Tolo officiating.

The death of this pioneer reduces the number of Civil War veterans in Winneshiek county to nine, M.T. Grattan and A.T. Brandhagen of Decorah, George W. Sherman of Frankville, Christian Wolfe of Festina, Newell Evert of Hesper, W.C. Fifield of Fremont twp, Chris Johnson of Calmar, Knut Grindeland of Highland, A.O. Ash of Bluffton.

Mr. Severson is said to have been the last Civil War soldier who lived in this county at the time of his enlistment. He served in the 15th Wisconsin from 1861 to 1864.

Mr. Severson was born in Sigdal, Norway, June 26, 1843. He came to America in 1849 and lived with his parents in Illinois till 1851. In that year they came to Winneshiek county, so Mr. Severson was one of the very oldest settlers. He married Bessie Tobiason July 26, 1876. To them were born 12 children, of whom five are dead. The survivors are Sever in the state of Washington, Albert in Saskatchewan, Theodore in North Dakota, Willie and Edgar at home, Otto north of Decorah, and Mrs. Ella Aakre in this city. He is survived by a brother, Amond, and a sister, Julia, of Decorah. He was a farmer all his life. He belonged to the Lutheran church.
