Sylvia C. Akre, age 90, a long-time resident of Decorah, IA, and most recently living in Des Moines, IA, died Friday, August 8, 2008 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Allen Vik officiating. Burial will be in Big Canoe Lutheran Cemetery in rural Decorah.

Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Monday, August 11 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Tuesday one hour before services at the Church.

Sylvia Clarise (Jarland) Akre was born May 7, 1918, in Epping, North Dakota, the daughter of Louis and Lisa (Grindeland) Jarland. She was baptized and confirmed at Epping Lutheran Church. She was united in marriage to Norman C. Akre on November 28, 1940 at Rev. T.O. Tolo’s home at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children: Joyce and Robert.

Sylvia graduated from Epping High School with the class of 1936. She graduated from Luther College in 1964 and worked on her Master’s degree at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. Sylvia taught elementary school at Winneshiek County rural schools in Highlandville, Washington Prairie, Springwater and Decorah. In 1985, she retired from Decorah’s East Side school after 25 years of teaching 5th grade.

Sylvia was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church since 1963. In addition, she was a member of Rebekka Lodge, Decorah B.P.W., National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society (Beta Eta), Silvercrest Country Club, and American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a long-time volunteer at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Winneshiek County Department of Human Services.

Sylvia was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed. An avid Bridge player, bread baker and cookie maker, she was known far and wide for her delicious bread, apple pie, lefse, sandbakel and krumkake.

Sylvia moved to Des Moines in 2003. She died Friday, August 8, 2008 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines at the age of 90 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman on July 7, 1962; her parents; and her six brothers: Truman, Myron, Harry, Engolf, Lawrence, and Walter.

Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Joyce Akre Cassis (Joseph) of Johnston, IA; her son, Robert Akre (Judy) of Clive, IA; three granddaughters: twins Lisa and Sara Akre, and Mallory Cassis; and by three sisters: Ellen Olson of Prairie du Chien, WI, Luella Asleson of Williston, ND and Clara Ploehm of Billings, MT. Memorials may be sent to the Greater Iowa Chapter of Alzheimer’s Association, 1730 28th Street, West Des Moines, IA, 50266.
