Lyla E. Gavle

Lyla E. Gavle, 84, of Decorah, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, at the Winneshiek County Hospital in Decorah, after a long illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m., at the Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah by the Rev. David Andreae.

Kathryn Bigler was the organist. The congregation sang "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less," "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Lift High the Cross."

Casket bearers were Craig Faldet, Marcus Faldet, Dale Lundy, Ernest Gavle, Vemon Gavle and Gordon Tangen.

Interment was at the Big Canoe Lutheran Church Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Lyla Eleanor (Lundy) Gavle was born March 1, 1916, in Pleasant Township of Winneshiek County, the daughter of George and Hilda (Engen) Lundy. She was baptized and confirmed at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church in rural Decorah.

She was married to Walter E. Gavle Dec. 28, 1938, at the Glenwood/Canoe Ridge parsonage, rural Decorah. To this union one son was born, Gary L. Gavle.

Lyla lived in Decorah, Pleasant and Highland Townships of Winneshiek County all her life. She and Walter farmed until they were appointed administrators of the Winneshiek County Care Facility.

Lyla served as the assistant administrator of the Winneshiek County Care Facility from 1959-81, and served as dietary supervisor there until her retirement in May of 1982.

Lyla was a member of Big Canoe Lutheran Church. As long as her health permitted, she was an active member of the Big Canoe Ladies Aid and its Ruth circle.

She enjoyed taking care of her own lawn, especially her flowers and pine trees. Lyla also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds.

Survivors include her son, Gary and Barbara Gavle of Decorah; two grandchildren, Jennifer Jane Gavle of Iowa City and Joseph Walter Gavle of Decorah; one sister, Marlys Goeke of Winona, Minn.; one brother, Henry Lundy of Hemet, Calif.; and 17 nieces and nephews.

Lyla Gavle was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, who died April 9, 1967; two brothers, Delmar and Walter Lundy; four sisters, Lenora Wennes, Violet Russell, Thema Faldet and Lillian Rooney; and three nephews.
