Edgar Realf Nelson

Edgar R. Nelson, 94, of Waukon, died Friday, July 16, 1999, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 20, at 11 a.m., at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with the Rev. David Andreae officiating.

Casket bearers will be his grandchildren and their spouses, Dayl and Julie Inglett, Mike and Renee Smock, Rick and Shelly Boatwright, Ed and Deb Arp, Joe and Jodi Burke, Don and Wendy Perkinson, Scott and Cindy Green, Rick Stoen and Kim Stoen.

Honorary casket bearers will be great-grandchildren Patrick, Nicholas and Stephanie Inglett; Justin, Erin and Corey Smock; Colin and Lisa Boatwright; Ashley, Lindsey and Brandon Arp; Hannah Burke; Kelsey, Kirsten and Kristina Perkinson; and Emily Green.

Burial will be in Big Canoe Cemetery, rural Decorah. the Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.

Edgar Realf Nelson was born July 14, 1905, in Pleasant Township of Winneshiek County, rural Decorah, the son of Eric and Stena (Thorson) Forde. His father died when Edgar was very young and he moved to South Dakota in 1909 when his mother married Olaus Nelson.

His mother died a few years later, and he moved back to Northeast Iowa in 1919, after Olaus married Anna Osmundson. Olaus and Anna then adopted Edgar.

He attended rural Winneshiek County schools. Edgar was baptized and confirmed at Big Canoe Lutheran Church and was a longtime member there, holding various offices in the church.

On Nov. 25, 1931, Edgar married Lenora J. Tangen at the Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church parsonage. He farmed in Hanover Township of Allamakee County until moving to Waukon in 1994.

Edgar was a sports fan, especially of baseball. He enjoyed fishing, visiting with neighbor and driving around the countryside. He had a good sense of humor and enjoyed working word-find puzzles in later years.

Survivors include two daughters, Loran and Chester Thune of Waukon, and Carol and Darrel Stoen of Decorah; eight granddaughters; one grandson; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Edgar Nelson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lenora; and three sisters, Anna Naley, Eva Kosbau and Irene Abel.
