Ingeborg Garden
Mrs. Halvor Garden, one of the well known pioneer mothers of Springfield township, was born in Vang, Valdres, Norway, in September, 1834, and died at Nordness, Iowa, Wednesday, May 27, 1908, following her husband by just four weeks, almost the same hour. She had been in usual health and upon rising from the supper table, said that she was not feeling well, and going to her room and lying down upon the bed, passed away within five minutes from heart failure.

Mrs. Garden’s maiden name was Isabelle [Ingeborg] Opdahl, and came to America on the same ship with her future husband, landing in New York July 4 [really was the 3rd], 1848, both coming to Wisconsin. She worked in Prairie du Chien and later in St. Paul, and in 1852 came here, her husband coming here from Wisconsin in 1850. They were married in October, 1854, and a family of twelve children were born to them, nine of whom survive, viz.: William of Dayton, N. D., Evans of Fertile, Minn., Nettie (Mrs. Hovey) of Hillsboro, N. D., Emma (Mrs. Bervig) of Souris, N. D., Mary, Annie (Mrs. Hagen) of Landa, N. D., Lizzie, Lorenzo of Souris, N. D., and Benjamin of Lansford, N. D. All of the children except Evans and Mrs. Hagen were present at the funeral, which was held on Monday, June 1st.
