MICHAEL J. MALANAPHY

M.J. Malanaphy was born in Winneshiek County near Decorah, Iowa in 1863. He spent two years in the machine business in Decorah and two years in Dixon, Nebraska in the machine business and in buying and shipping stock. He served two years as country reorder of Dixon County, Nebraska.

In 1892 Michael returned from Nebraska working on his father's farm north of Decorah for one year, and then moved to Cresco in 1893 where he resided to the time of his death. He was engaged in buying and shipping stock and hogs, though for a time he was interested in the meat market with Mr. Lickteig.

In 1890, Michael married Mary Elizabeth Foley, February 6, in St. Benedict's Church in Decorah by Rev. Father Lonegran. The couple moved to Cresco shortly after the wedding. They were parents of six children, John of Laguna Beach CA; Hugh of Seattle, Washington; and Urban of Houston, Texas all deceased--others Abbie Peter, Adm. Michael J. and Rosetta of Cresco, Iowa. Several grandchildren, one lives in Cresco, Ralph Fitzgerald.

Mary Elizabeth Foley, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Foley, was born in Winneshiek County, February 27, 1866. She entered school in Chicago, Illinois. She had four brothers, having preceded her in death, John, Rev. Michael, William and Hugh. Her father died December 19, 1894, and her mother September 6, 1901.

Mrs. Mary Malanaphy, 81, passed away October 21, 1947 of pneumonia in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Peter.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. D.J. Sweeney in the Assumption Church in Cresco. Burial was in St. Bridget's Cemetery in Bluffton.

Mrs. Malanaphy lived in Cresco at 215 W. 6th Street.
