Wint Chumbley
(August 16, 1853 – June 9, 1940)

Wint Chumbley, a County Pioneer, Dies on June 9
Native of Virginia. He Came To Warren County in 1860. Worked on Old Courthouse.
Wint Chumbley, 86, who came to this county with his parents in 1860, and had lived in the same neighborhood for the past 40 years, died at his home near Browns Chapel, Sunday, June 9. Services were held Tuesday afternoon at Browns Chapel with interment in the Indianola Cemetery. The Rev Dr. W. M. Scheuermann, pastor of the Indianola Methodist Church, had charge of the services. Mr. Chumbley, who drove a derrick horse hoisting brick and mortar when the old courthouse was built in 1867, occupied a seat of honor at the dedication of the new courthouse, Saturday, Dec. 3, 1938, and helped to lay the cornerstone. At that time he said he remembers most vividly seeing soldiers of the Civil War assembled on the square before the old courthouse was built.
Native of Virginia
He was born Aug. 16, 1853, in Pulaski County, Virginia. He was married to Miss Sarah E. Crumrine Feb. 16, 1876. Mr. and Mrs. Chumbley lived in the same neighborhood all of their 62 years of married life. Mrs. Chumbley died about two years ago. He is survived by 10 children and 24 grandchildren. The children are: Mrs. Rose McCoy, Las Animas, Colo.; Charles B. Chumbley, Oconto, Nebr.; Arthur C., George G., Noah D., and Mrs. Emma Wood of Indianola; Clay C., Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Susan Honderdick, LaCrosse, Kans.; Mrs. Myrtle Currler, Mason City, and Martha Alice Chumbley, Wichita, Kans.
